Start with the schedule you can actually tolerate
A request that can wait until tomorrow does not need a check every quarter hour. Write down the maximum acceptable delay, who notices a missed run, and whether weekends matter before choosing an interval. The objective is timely, correct work within a budget; the smallest interval is not automatically the right setting.
This guide uses Make documentation checked September 13, 2026. We have not run the example scenarios or measured a customer account. The worksheet is an original planning and reconciliation tool, not a tested scenario export.
Count polling checks separately from useful records
Make describes polling as checking an application on a schedule. Its scheduling tutorial gives hourly checks as 24 trigger credits per day, or 720 for a 30-day month; processing additional records adds work beyond that baseline. This explains why a quiet inbox can still consume a scheduling budget.
For a standard trigger assumed to use one credit per check, estimate checks as active minutes divided by interval minutes. Multiply by active days and the number of equivalent scenarios. For a daily window, round up when a partial interval exists; treat that as a planning allowance until you confirm actual execution times.

Build a complete budget without counting a trigger twice
Use three separate lines: scheduled trigger checks, downstream processing, and reserve. If a measured run total already includes its trigger, subtract that trigger before treating the remainder as downstream cost. Otherwise the same check appears in two places. Keep separate scenarios separate until their assumptions really match.
Illustration: 720 scheduled checks plus 100 records at an assumed three downstream credits each equals 1,020 credits. A chosen reserve of 102 credits brings the planning total to 1,122. These figures are arithmetic examples; neither the record count, module cost, nor ten-percent reserve is a measured result or a vendor recommendation.
Make distinguishes ordinary credit usage from dynamic usage for some advanced and AI features. Do not extend a one-credit assumption to every module. Record the actual module and its billing basis; a connected provider may also bill separately.
Reconcile the estimate with a small observation window
- Record the scenario name, module, schedule timezone, active dates, and interval in the worksheet. Keep credentials and customer records out of it.
- Observe an empty check and a representative populated run when authorized. Record their timestamps and reported credits separately. Do not invent a successful measurement when history does not expose the detail you need.
- Compare the planned check count with the actual count for the same window. Investigate paused schedules, extra manual runs, retries, record volume, and changed modules before extrapolating.
- Write a revised estimate alongside the original. Preserve the assumption that changed and the evidence date so the next reviewer can reproduce your decision.
Choose the least expensive change that still meets the job
A longer interval, narrower operating window, or paused unused scenario may be enough. If the connected app supports an appropriate instant trigger, investigate that alternative; do not assume every event can be delivered that way. Make Academy distinguishes scheduled polling from instant triggers.

No. The examples here assume one standard polling trigger credit per check. Downstream modules, records, retries, and dynamic-credit features can change the total. Check the relevant module and observed run details.
